The Icelandic Women’s Chess Championship 2024 took place from 5-11 February in Kopavogur, Iceland. The event was played as 8-player round-robin tournament and determined Iceland’s National Chess Champion in Women’s category.
WIM Olga Prudnykova convincingly won the event scoring perfect 7/7 points! Prudnykova performed in the tournament with 2614 rating performance and earned 15.6 rating points. WGM Lenka Ptacnikova trailed by two points, and clinched silver medal, while Johanna Bjorg Johannsdottir claimed bronze with 4.5 points. (Final rankings can be seen below)
The Icelandic Chess Federation simultaneously organized the Senior Championships. Gudmundur Gislason won the 50+ championship with the score of 8/9 points and Ogmundur Kristinsson won the 65+ competition with the score of 4/5 points.
Icelandic Women’s Challengers tournament was played from 11-15 February, and Emilia Embla B Berglindardottir won the event with a perfect score of 5/5 points. Two players tied for silver scoring 4 points, each, but Hildur Berglind Johannsdottir came second thanks to better tiebreaks and Soley Kria Helgadottir won bronze.
The rich tournament schedule of the Icelandic Chess Federation continues in March with the Reykjavik Chess Open 2024 which already attracted more than 400 entries.
