WFM Laman Hajiyeva and GM Rauf Mamedov win Azerbaijani Rapid Championships 2022

19-year-old Azerbaijani WFM Laman Hajiyeva and five-time Azerbaijani Chess Champion in classical chess GM Rauf Mamedov clinched the titles at the 2022 Rapid Chess Championship of Azerbaijan.

It was a two-way tie for gold in the Women’s section after seven played rounds as WFM Laman Hajieva and WFM Ayan Allahverdiyeva scored 5 points each. The first tiebreak criteria was a direct encounter result and Hajiyeva claimed gold thanks to her fifth-round victory against Allahverdiyeva. IM Ulviyya Fataliyeva, WGM Khayala Abdulla and WCM Malak Ismayil tied for bronze with 4.5 points, with tiebreaks criteria determining Fataliyeva as the bronze medalist.

GM Rauf Mamedov won the Azerbaijani Rapid Chess Championship 2022 for Men thanks to his victory in the fifth round against GM Vugar Asadli. As both players scored 7/9 points, the direct encounter between the tiers determined Mamedov as the new Rapid Champion of Azerbaijan. GM Mahammad Muradli was in clear third with 7 points.

The Azerbaijani Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2022 took place from 2-5 December in Baku. The total prize pool of the events was $4700, with $2940 dedicated to the Open Rapid and Blitz events, and $1760 reserved for the Women’s championships.
