With just days left until the 2024 Chess Olympiad, several federations are still waiting for visas to enter Hungary, posing a major challenge. African nations are particularly impacted by visa issues.
In response to our inquiry, the African Chess Confederation stated that “Executive is working extremely hard to ensure that its member associates who have registered for the Olympiads will compete in the prestigious event.”
Out of the 16 members in Kenya’s delegation, five were denied visas without explanation, including Mercy Ingado, who recently teamed up with entrepreneur and chess enthusiast James Altucher for a fundraising event.
The situation has left many concerned, as time is running out to resolve these visa issues before the Olympiad begins.
