Nijat Abasov arrives in Toronto with his second

The Candidates Tournament 2024 is around the corner! The event will open tomorrow, and officially kicks off with the first round on Thursday, 4th of April. The well-known chess names are now in Toronto, and the players are checking into their hotels with their seconds.

GM Nijat Abasov was seen in the hotel with Azerbeijani’s best-rated player – GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov who competed in the Candidates Tournament three times (in 2011, 2014 and 2018) will be the main person in Abasov’s team for the 2024 Candidates.

Nijat Abasov qualified for the Candidates Tournament as the fourth-placed player in the World Cup 2023, since Magnus Carlsen decided to withdraw from the Candidates.
