The Hong Kong Chess Championships 2024 took place last month at the Hong Kong Taoist Association Wun Tsuen School. The event was played in two categories: Open and Women’s, with 10 swiss rounds in each section. The Winners of the tournaments were crowned Hong Kong Chess Champions for 2024, and the top three finishers secured their spots in the National teams for the upcoming Chess Olympiad 2024.
Jamison Edrich Kao emerged convincing winner of the Open tournament with the score of 9/10 points. 15-year-old Jamison Edrich Kao went unbeaten, with 8 victories and two draws. He finished the event point and a half ahead of four runner-ups. 13-year-old Pui Yin Brandon Chan had the best tiebreaks to clinch silver, and 15-year-old Wang Ip Boris Chan came third claiming the last spot for the National team. Chun Yung Samuel Lam had the same score of 7.5 points but finished fourth according to tiebreak criteria, and FM Daniel King Wai Lam came fifth. Final rankings can be found below.
The top-seeded player of the Women’s tournament WFM Eunice Feng lived up to the expectations and won the Championship with the score of 9 points. 15-year-old Hong Kong Champion for 2024 had two draws and 8 victories. 14-year-old Tian Yi Liu was second with 8 points, while 12-year-old Yuxin Loui clinched bronze and reserved her seat in the National team with 7.5 points and better tiebreaks than Hoi Ting Leung who had the same score.
