Anish Giri vs Hans Niemann Match

American Grandmaster Hans Niemann defeats Anish Giri in the first match of the “Hans Niemann against the World Series” that took place from 7-11th August at the City Hall in Utrecht, Netherlands.

The match consisted of: 6 classical games over 3 days (double rounds), 6 rapid games over 1 day, and 12 blitz games over 1 day. Games are weighted as 3/2/1 points, depending on the format.

Niemann started by winning the Blitz portion by 7.5-4.5. The same evening he proceeded to eliminate Wesley So from the online Speed Chess Championship, qualifying himself for the live SCC Finals in Paris, where he will meet Magnus Carlsen.

Continuing the World Series Match, Niemann lost the first Classical game, but he managed to turn the tables win the Classical portion by 3.5-2.5.

Finally, in the Rapid segment the result was a 3-3 tie. Overall, the final score is 24-18 in Niemann’s favor. Replay all games here.
