GM Aydin Suleymanli and IM Gulnar Mammadova are new Azerbaijani Blitz Champions

17-year-old multiple-time Azerbaijani Youth Chess Champion GM Aydin Suleymanli added the Azerbaijani Blitz Chess Championship Winner’s trophy to his collection after winning the National Blitz Chess Championship of Azerbaijan. The 2021 Azerbaijani Women’s Champion IM Gulnar Mammadova won the Women’s tournament.

It was a tight fight for the top of the Open section which finished in a three-way tie between GM Aydin Suleymanli, GM Vugar Asadli and GM Rauf Mamedov who scored 7 points, each. Suleymanli had the best tiebreaks and clinched gold, Asadli won silver medal and Mamedov came third.

IM Gulnar Mammadova smoothly sailed to a victory of the Azerbaijani Women’s Blitz Chess Championship 2022. She scored unbeaten 6/7 points, almost winning the event with a round to spare. A draw in the last round was enough for Mammadova to be in sole first position. WGM Khanim Balajayeva trailed by a full point and claimed silver, and WGM Turkan Mamedjarova won bronze with a score of 4.5 points.

The Azerbaijan Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2022 took place from 2-5 December in Baku. The total prize pool of the events was $4700, with $2940 dedicated to the Open Rapid and Blitz events and $1760 reserved for the Women’s championships.
