GM Aleksandr Volodin and WFM Anastassia Sinitsina emerged as the Winners of the Estonian Chess Championship 2022.
GM Aleksandr Volodin scored unbeaten 7/9 points, and the last-round draw against Andrei Timoshin was enough to take the sole victory in the tournament. Volodin clinched his third national title, previously winning Estonia’s 2018 and 2021 National Championships. The 7th seed of the event Andrei Timoshin impressed with a fantastic performance as he scored 6.5 points, without a loss at the Championship. Timoshin earned 71.4 ELO points and claimed the silver medal thanks to better tiebreaks than the top-seeded GM Kaido Kulaots who had the same score of 6.5 points but finished third.
WFM Anastassia Sinitsina defended the 2021 title winning the Estonian Women’s Chess Championship 2022 with 3.5/4 points. WFM Sofia Blokhin was second with 2.5 points while Marina Levchenko and Lidia Ivanova tied for third with 2 points, each. Tiebreaks favored Marina Levchenko who claimed the bronze medal.
Estonian Open and Women’s Chess Championships 2022 took place from 10-18 December in Tallinn. The open tournament was played as a 10-player round-robin and the women’s championship featured 5 players who competed in 5 rounds (round-robin system).
