The 10th World Francophone Chess Championships were held from 13-20th August at the Pavillon Maurice-Pollack of Laval University in Québec, Canada.
The traditional annual tournaments were organized by the Fédération québécoise des échecs (FQE) and l’Association internationale des échecs francophones (AIDEF).
The Championships consisted of three events:
- Classical 9-round tournament with the time control 90min + 30sec
- Rapid tournament with the time control 15min + 5sec
- Blitz tournament with the time control 3min + 2sec
The Classical tournament has attracted 125 players form 17 chess federations. Among them were 5 Grandmasters and 9 International Masters.
Grandmaster Gabriel Flom from France and 16-years old FM Erick Zhao from the USA shared first place with 7.5/9 points each. Flom is declared winner on slightly better tie-break.
Top-seeded GM Christian Bauer was in joint lead after 7 rounds, but he lost the last two games, dropping down in the standings.
However, Bauer did win the Rapid Francophone Chess Championship with 8/9 points. The best player in the Blitz Francophone Chess Championship was local GM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux, who scored 10/11 points.
The total prize fund of the Championship was 20.000 CAD.
