FIDE World Chess Cup 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan

The FIDE World Chess Cup 2023 will be held from July 29 to August 25 in Baku, Azerbaijan. It will be a 206-player knockout tournament with three qualification spots for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 and the total prize fund of $1,834,000. FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup 2023 will be simultaneously held in the same venue, with 103 players, three qualification spots for the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2024 and the total prize fund of $676,250.

The 2023 FIDE World Chess Cup will be played in 8 knockout rounds. 156 players will play in the round 1 and the 50 top seeds of the event will join the 78 winners of Round 1 in the second round. Each round will be played as a two-game match, and the Winners of each match will advance to the next round. The time control for each game shall be: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1. The players cannot draw a game by mutual agreement before black’s 30th move.

If the score is level after the two regular games, two tie-break games will be played with time control of 25 minutes + 10 seconds increment. If the score is still tied, the new match of two games with time control of 10 minutes + 10 seconds increment will be played. If this match finishes in a level score, the match of 2 games with time control of 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment will be played. Finally, if there is no winner after this match, the players will play games with time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment until someone wins the game.
