Fabiano Caruana wins Grand Chess Tour Romania 2023

The first leg of the Grand Chess Tour 2023 – Superbet Chess Classic – concluded in Bucharest, Romania. After drawing his last game Fabiano Caruana won the event with a score of 5.5/9, taking home a 1st place prize of $100,000.

The current No. 2 American led for most of the event, and secured the title after his nearest rivals all drew their final round games, leaving him half a point ahead of the field. Tied for second place were Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, Anish Giri, and Richard Rapport, all with 5.0/9.

The first leg of the Grand Chess Tour 2023 saw the new World Champion Ding Liren and the World Championship Challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi in the field, just a week after the end of the World Chess Championship match. Replay all games here

Over the course of five Grand Chess Tour events, the tour players are collecting GCT points based on the final ranking of each full tour player in each event. The three players who score the most Tour Points over the course of the 2023 Season shall be awarded $175.000 bonus payments.
