The European Chess Championship 2024 will take place from 7-20 November in Herceg Novi, Montenegro.
The event was primarily scheduled to be held in Israel, but due to the ongoing happenings, the ECU Board decided to move the event to Montenegro this year. The city of Herceg Novi will host the event and the playing venue will be the Sports Hall Igalo.
During the European Team Chess Championship 2023 in Budva, Montenegro, the ECU President Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili explained that ECU cannot depend on the situation and that the European Individual Chess Championship needs to be organized. “Israel Chess Federation earned the right to organize the European Individual Chess Championship, but maybe it’s the best solution if they organize the event in the coming years when they have a full guarantee the war will finish“, said Azmaiparashvili in the interview during the live broadcast. He added that the Israeli Chess Federation will organize the European Individual Chess Championship for sure in some of the coming years, but that the European Chess Union already at that time looked for another organizer for the 2024.
