American Continental Championship 2024 dedicated to the memory of Jorge Vega

The American Continental Chess Championship 2024 will be held from 24 May – 2 June in Medellin, Colombia. The 17th American Continental Championship this year adds “Jorge Vega Memorial” in its name, and dedicates the event to the memory of the legendary Jorge Vega Fernandez. Born in Cuba, Jorge Vega (1935-2023) was a key figure for chess in the Americas and served as the President of the Confederation of Chess for Americas (CCA) for nearly 20 years.

The American Continental Chess Championship 2024 will be played in 11 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 90 minutes + 30-second increment. The total prize fund of the event is $23,000, with $5,000 reserved for the American Continental Champion. In the field of more than 150 players, GM Georg Meier (Uruguay) triumphed in the 2023 tournament and will be defending the title this year.

The American Continental Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2024 will be held on June 1 and May 29 (respectively), with $4,000 in prizes ($2,500 reserved for the Rapid tournament and $1,500 for Blitz). The official hotel and the playing venue of the events will be Hotel el Dorado de la 70.

The event is open to all players representing federations listed as members of the Confederation of Chess for Americas (CCA). The invited players will have covered expenses in the tournament according to the event’s regulations. Registrations should be done through National Chess Federations before the registration deadline 24th of April, 2024.

Hosting City: Medellin, Colombia

The picturesque Colombian city of Medellin hosts the American Continental Chess Championship this year. Medellin is the second-largest city in Colombia, with a population of 2,5 milion, and lays in the Aburra Valley, a central region of the Andes Mountains. The city is known as “the City of Eternal Spring” due to its perfect combination of warm days and cool nights and it’s famous for flower-producing centers and street arts.
