Alireza Firouzja qualified for the Speed Chess Championship Final after eliminating the event’s five-time champion Hikaru Nakamura in the Semifinal that was played tonight.
Firouzja took an early lead 5.5-3.5 in the 5 min + 1 sec segment, then extended the gap with a dominant 6.5-2.5 performance in the 3+1 portion.
Although Nakamura narrowly won the 1+1 segment by 5-4, it wasnโt enough for a comeback, as Firouzja triumphed with a total score of 16-11.
In the Final Firouzja will play against the winner of the Magnus Carlsen vs Hans Niemann match that is starting soon.
Earlier this year Firouzja also defeated Nakamura twice in the Bullet Chess Championship Final.
