African Chess Championship 2024 – All information

The African Chess Championship 2024 takes place from 12-21 March 2024 at the Accra International Conference Centre, in Accra, Ghana.

The event is played in two categories: Open and Women’s, with 9 rounds (swiss system) in both events, and the time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move. The event will follow the “no early draws” rule, and draw offers will not be allowed before Black’s 30th move.

GM Amin Bassem (Egypt, 2670) is the top-seeded player of the Open section which gathers 50 players, while WGM Wafa Shahenda (Egypt, 2083) headlines the Women’s tournament. The complete lists of players are shown below.

The total prize fund of the events is $20.000, with $5.000 reserved for the winner in the Open section, and $2.000 reserved for the winner in the Women’s tournament. The winners of the Open Section and the Women’s Section will be awarded the FIDE Titles of Grand Master (GM) and the Women International Grand Master (WGM) respectively. In order to receive the title, the winners must have attained the following minimum rating GM (2300) and WGM (2100).

Tournament schedule:

The event is open to all players representing national federations who are listed as members of the African Chess Confederation. Each National Federation is entitled to enter a maximum of 5 players in each section, and the host country has the right to enter up to 10 players in each section. The registration deadline is February 20th, 2024.
