The 2024 U.S. Chess Championship and the 2024 U.S. Women’s Chess Championship are taking place from 11-24th October at the World Chess Hall of Fame in Saint Louis.
After five rounds of play IM Carissa Yip is leading the Women’s Championship with perfect 5/5 score. She defeated IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova and remains in contention for the Bobby Fischer prize of 64,000 USD.
In the Open Championship Awonder Liang won against the youngest Grandmaster in history Abhimanyu Mishra to join Fabiano Caruana and Hans Niemann on the top.
Caruana won against Christopher Yoo, but later this game was annulled as Yoo’s results are removed from the crosstable.
“There was a rather unfortunate incident which happened after the game which resulted in Chief Arbiter Chris Bird expelling Christopher Yoo from the tournament after a gross violation of both the St Louis Chess Club’s code of conduct and the US Chess safe play policy.”
Saint Louis Chess Club statement clarified that after the game Yoo teared up his scoresheet and struck a videographer. Yoo is banned from the club. His results are removed from the crosstable as he had played less than 50% of the games in the event (5 out of 11).
