Norwegian chess podcast Sjakksnakk, hosted by Askild Bryn and Odin Blikra Vea, celebrated the International Chess Day by sharing a video of Magnus Carlsen talking about Gukesh’s calculation style.
“And from talking to Gukesh, hearing the way he talks about chess in general and the games that he played, I think he is extremely calculation based.
It’s also one of the reasons why he struggles more in faster chess, because then he cannot quite calculate fast enough for that style to work off. You need a lot more experience. He calculates extremely well, precisely. He’s undogmatic in the way he calculates.
So he will find ideas that other may not, but he will go further in lines that others will not, at least compared to myself who’s a bit of a lazy calculator.”
