Classical chess returns to southern Brazil this weekend as the RS Chess Open 2026 officially begins in Porto Alegre. Running from June 4 to June 7, 2026, the four-day chess festival will be hosted at the primary playing hall located at Av. Veiga, 223 in the Cel. Aparício Borges neighborhood.
The event is highly integrated into the Brazilian competitive pathway, offering 30 qualification spots for the Brazilian Championship Final. Additionally, performance results over the weekend will count directly toward CBX (Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez) title point requirements for the Mestre Nacional (National Master) and Candidato a Mestre (Candidate Master) designations.
The main event is a 7-round Swiss tournament rated for both CBX and FIDE standard listings. Competitors will play under a classical time control of 90 minutes for the entire game, supplemented by a 30-second increment per move starting from move one. To accommodate scheduling needs, players are permitted to request a half-point bye exclusively for Round 1.
The classical schedule kicks off on Thursday evening, June 4, with an opening ceremony at 7:00 PM followed immediately by Round 1 at 7:30 PM. The tournament then drives forward with a demanding two-rounds-per-day format on Friday and Saturday, before concluding with the final two rounds on Sunday, June 7.
Beyond the primary classical tournament, the festival features two distinct side events:
- Rapid Doubles Tournament: A unique 6-round Swiss event for pairs utilizing a 10+5 time control. It takes place entirely on Thursday afternoon, June 4, running from the 1:30 PM technical meeting until the final round concludes around 6:00 PM.
- Optional Blitz Tournament: A fast-paced 3+2 tournament scheduled to run after the conclusion of the classical event on Sunday, provided a minimum registration threshold of 30 participants is met.
Organized by a team led by Tournament Director Rogério Sperb Becker, the festival features a total cash prize fund of R$ 30,000. To ensure a fair distribution across the field, players are not permitted to combine multiple cash prizes. The guaranteed financial rewards include:
- Overall Classical Standings: R$ 6,000 for 1st place, R$ 4,000 for 2nd, R$ 2,000 for 3rd, R$ 1,500 for 4th, and R$ 1,200 for 5th. Payouts scale down to R$ 500 flat rates for 10th through 15th place finishers.
- Best Women Category: Dedicated sub-prizes of R$ 1,000 for 1st, R$ 750 for 2nd, and R$ 500 for 3rd.
Should players finish equal on points at the end of seven rounds, final placements and prize distributions will be determined by a strict sequence of competitive tie-breaks: direct encounter, Buchholz Cut 1 (discarding the best and worst results), total Buchholz, progressive score, and finally, total number of victories.
