FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship 2024 is underway in New York with major incidents about the dress code breach. World No 1 GM Magnus Carlsen got expelled from the 9th round of the event for wearing jeans, paying the $200 fine. GM Ian Nepomniachtchi was also fined with $200, and got forced to change his pants.
German’s best-rated female chess player GM Elisabeth Paehtz revealed that the dress code drama niether passed by the Women’s tournament. Paehtz wrote on X/Twitter that FIDE forced underaged girl to change her jeans to comply with the strict dress code. Since she didn’t have a reserve pair of allowed pants, she borrowed a scarf from her mother and wrapped it around her hips to make a skirt look. Paehtz adds that the girl was left with naked legs, not having any tights to wear.
Many of chess players and enthusiasts marked FIDE’s decisions on dress code breach as ridiculous, calling for common sense on the matter.
